ABOUT
MOONSTONE

jeremy 21 moonstone lane

Before moving to 103 Amoy Street, MOONSTONE was birthed at 21 Moonstone Lane, Unit 09-01, Poh Leng Building, beside the hot pink temple.

Uncle Jem found this listing as Ms Yangermeister wanted a studio to paint. It had a great vibe - kinda rabs but a lot of damn potential. “Just like us,” we hoped.

Sadly, it was too big for Yangzo alone. So Yanger pulled in her bestiepal Rellies. They thought “I don’t care what it is, but we want this space”.

How to make money to sustain art? That, is always the question.

The space was originally held by Bruno’s catering and cafeteria, and they held an existing beer license.

Based on a good feeling (on which all the best business decisions are made of course), as true business entrepreneurs, we thought, “make bar loh”.

And… MOONSTONE was born! Art studio and creative space by day, alcoholic and degenerate refuge by night.

21 MOONSTONE went on to become the home of a few too many 21st birthday parties, general hangs, and beautiful budding creatives tired of Starbucks. Our community grew into a reliable space for good conversations with a f**k ton of damn heart.

Eventually, we somehow also became home to SCDF, NEA, SPF… so we got the hint and GTFO-ed. And disappeared for a year or so.

But we came back better than ever, and found a new home at 103 Amoy Street. We began a 2nd attempt at reviving whatever it was that we had. Not the same, but not too different. Still based on friendship, struggles, and parkouring through a myriad of red tape to find a place where we can just be ourselves. Whatever that means.

MOONSTONE Bar at Amoy Street

Take 2!

Home to Gubak Kia and MOONSTONE Bar!

Today, MOONSTONE Bar’s kitchen is run by Gubak Kia - a family heritage business with humble beginnings from a Siglap Kopitiam with tons of soul and culture - known amongst young east siders to be a reliable and popular spot for hearty beef noodles.

“Gubak kia basically means ‘beef boy’ which was derived from everyone calling my dad Gubak/Uncle Gubak when he still was operating & naturally everyone in the coffee shop would call me Gubak Kia” - Head Chef at Moonstone Bar, John Paul

The business has been passed down for generations and its current Head Chef, John Paul, has expanded the menu from beef-centric dishes to include other delicious proteins from tofu dumplings, to plump grilled chicken legs, to juicy, tender pork ribs. His current menu still serves the heritage beef noodles alongside other modern dishes.
